FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Christian Frye, I’m 18 years old and proudly from Atlanta, Georgia. I’m a rising sophomore at North Carolina A&T State University, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a focus on medical applications. I’m passionate about using science to create real, lasting change in underserved communities. Beyond the classroom, I’m focused on growing as a leader, building strong networks, mentoring others, and opening doors for the next generation—just like others have done for me. Whether it’s through engineering or everyday service, I’m committed to making an impact.
FOSSI: What did it feel like when you found out you received the FOSSI scholarship?
Honestly, I was overjoyed. All I could do was thank God for His blessings. Receiving this award felt like confirmation, not just of my hard work, but that others see the potential in me to become someone who makes a difference. It reminded me that my dreams are valid and that I’m not walking this path alone.
FOSSI: What kind of impact do you hope to be making ten years from now?
Ten years from now, I hope to be leading innovation at the intersection of bioengineering and health equity, developing medical technologies that actually reach and serve underserved communities. Whether it’s designing affordable diagnostic tools or advancing prosthetics, I want my work to reflect both technical excellence and deep compassion. I also hope to be mentoring students who look like me: Black, queer, first-gen students, proving that you don’t have to choose between being brilliant and being yourself.
FOSSI: What are some surprising or unique facts about you?

- I have a love for medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, my all-time favorite sho
w. - I have a tendency to unwind at home and stay there; it’s my happy place. If not binge-watching Grey’s for the 30th time, I’m either catching up on political commentary or replaying classic Drake albums.
- I care deeply about the direction of our country economically, socially, and politically. I believe staying informed is just as important as staying authentic.
