Meet Logan Crawford: 2025 FOSSI Scholar Attending Prairie View A&M University

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a driven, thoughtful, and resilient young woman currently majoring in Chemical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University. I take pride in pushing myself academically and embracing challenges that push me beyond my comfort zone. My journey to this point has been shaped by rigorous coursework, including dual credit classes, AP Chemistry, and college-level government studies, all of which taught me the importance of discipline, time management, and perseverance. While the pressure has sometimes felt overwhelming, those moments forced me to grow stronger, more focused, and more confident in my abilities.

As a Chemical Engineering major, I am passionate about using science and problem-solving to create practical solutions that make a real impact. I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in the oil and gas industry or the cosmetics field, where chemistry plays a critical role in innovation and sustainability. One of my long-term goals is to create my own skincare line designed specifically for people with eczema, combining technical expertise with empathy and a desire to help others feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

My faith is a central part of who I am and has guided me through seasons of stress, self-doubt, and growth. As a Christian, I rely on God’s guidance to remain grounded and focused on my purpose, especially during demanding academic and personal moments.

FOSSI: What moment or experience sparked your love for STEM?

The moment that sparked my interest in STEM occurred when I was younger, around 2016 or 2017, during a time when the beauty industry and beauty gurus were rapidly rising in popularity. I developed an unexpected passion for makeup, particularly watching it be applied and seeing the creativity and transformation it allowed. I frequently watched beauty gurus online and became fascinated by the artistry behind cosmetics.

One video in particular stood out to me: James Charles documenting the process of creating his makeup palette in a laboratory. As he explained how scientists carefully formulated each product, I realized that makeup was not just about beauty, but also about chemistry, precision, and innovation.

Seeing science applied in such a creative and tangible way changed my perspective. For the first time, I understood that STEM could directly impact everyday life and personal confidence. That experience sparked my curiosity about how products are developed and inspired me to learn more about the science behind them.

FOSSI: Who inspires you, and what have they taught you about what’s possible?

Two people who inspire me most are my mother and my grandmother, each shaping different but equally important parts of who I am today. My mother inspires me through her strong work ethic and independence. She has taught me the importance of working hard, staying determined, and becoming my own person rather than allowing others to define my path. Watching her persevere has shown me that success is built through consistency, discipline, and self-belief.

My grandmother inspires me through her unwavering faith in God. She has taught me to trust in God’s timing and remain faithful even during difficult seasons. Her encouragement reminds me that challenges are not roadblocks, but opportunities for growth, and that with faith and perseverance, I will succeed. Together, my mother and grandmother have shown me what is possible when hard work and faith go hand in hand.
