Meet Kyndall Jackson: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State

October 1, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Kyndall Jackson, a 17-year-old from Richmond, Virginia. In the fall, I will be attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University as a bioengineering major.

Growing up, anxiety was a constant presence in my life, shadowing even the simplest moments. Losing my dad at the age of five left a void that anxiety quickly filled. Despite the challenges, this struggle nurtured my resilience and shaped my perspective on life. Living with anxiety taught me to find beauty amid chaos and to appreciate moments of calm, fostering a deeper sense of self-compassion and empathy for others.

I am eager to contribute to my college community, push beyond my comfort zone, and strive to make a positive impact on those around me. With determination and enthusiasm, I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

My fascination with the human body and modern medicine was ignited by Grey’s Anatomy. However, as I delved deeper, I realized my true passion lies in the innovative application of science and engineering to healthcare. Biomedical engineering became my chosen path, offering a perfect blend of my interests in problem-solving and my desire to make a tangible impact in the healthcare field.

I am excited by the transformative potential of biomedical engineering. My goal is to address healthcare disparities and ensure that medical advancements are accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic background. I am eager to contribute to my college community, push beyond my comfort zone, and strive to make a positive impact on those around me. With determination and enthusiasm, I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I am driven by a profound desire to make a meaningful difference in the healthcare field, particularly for people of color. Growing up, I witnessed the disparities in healthcare access and outcomes within my community, and I am determined to address these inequities through innovative solutions.

As a future bioengineer, I am particularly focused on tackling diseases that disproportionately affect the African American community, such as sickle cell disease and asthma. These conditions not only impact physical health but also contribute to long-term socioeconomic challenges. Moreover, historically women of color have been underrepresented in these fields, and I want to stand out as a role model and advocate for diversity and inclusion. I hope to inspire women from similar backgrounds to pursue their passions in STEM, demonstrating that their contributions are valuable and necessary.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Growing up with my mom, who has been a widow since I was five, I’ve seen the immense sacrifices she has made to support our family. Losing my dad at such a young age was a profound emotional and financial blow, and it often left me hesitant to pursue my dreams fully, fearing I would place additional burdens on her.  The FOSSI scholarship will ease some of the financial pressures of attending NCAT, allowing me to focus on my education and passion. This scholarship also represents recognition of my resilience and determination. Overcoming personal adversities has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate individual. I can now embark on my educational journey with confidence, knowing that I have the support needed to achieve my goals and make a positive difference in the world.
