Meet Kayla Gordon: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Spelman College

May 9, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Kayla Gordon, a dual degree Biology and Biomedical Engineering major attending Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. I have always been fascinated by organisms, and my question has always been, “How does that work?” Early on, I jumped at the chance to do dissections and I am intrigued by learning how organs provide functionality to living things. Through laboratory experiences in biology classes, applying mathematics to solve problems, and through experiences in maker spaces, I plan to develop a skill set that will allow me to become a biomedical engineer. Most importantly, I intend to leverage my knowledge to help others with health needs. I can easily envision my future self sketching up designs for new medical devices, then prototyping them in a design space, and finally testing them for use for young children in need.

The FOSSI Scholarship is substantially broader than a typical scholarship. In addition to providing me with financial support to attend Spelman College, the award also connects me with industry mentors that can guide my professional career.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

A STEM degree is essential for me because it will allow me to help solve some critical needs for child amputees. I plan on using my engineering skills to learn how to incorporate new materials and new manufacturing processes to make better prosthetics for young people. Lessons learned in computer-aided design, manufacturing, and physiology will be important for me as I will incorporate them into my toolbox.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

The FOSSI Scholarship is substantially broader than a typical scholarship. In addition to providing me with financial support to attend Spelman College, the award also connects me with industry mentors that can guide my professional career. I plan to be the very first biomedical engineer in my family, and to achieve that goal I will need a community of professors, peers, and mentors. Outside of the classroom, engineering students can build their skill sets in maker spaces, innovation labs, and machine shops. Rather than maintaining part-time employment during school, this award will allow me to focus on my studies and enriching experiences. I am humbled and very grateful to be a 2023 recipient of the prestigious FOSSI Scholarship.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • Although I grew up in Orlando, I was actually born in Atlanta. My family and I moved to Florida just before my second birthday.
  •  In autumn, every Saturday means college football all day for my family. I enjoy watching my favorite teams play.
  • My hobbies are digital drawing, video-making, and set design.
  • I am fascinated by anime and all things Japanese and Korean. I hope to study abroad in these places someday and experience their culture and cuisine firsthand.
