At the latest FOSSI Fundamentals of Success (FoS) session, the “scholar spotlight” was on FOSSI scholar Tyra Ravenell, a junior at Alabama A&M University, majoring in mechanical engineering. At the start of the session, Adrienne Blanks, FoS program manager, asked Tyra to share her thoughts about attending an HBCU and the FOSSI program.
Why did you decide to attend an HBCU?
I chose an HBCU because both of my parents attended one, specifically, South Carolina State University. I grew up going to HBCU events so I knew what an HBCU was from a young age. Around high school, I started researching which HBCU would be the best one for me. I chose Alabama A&M University because as a black woman studying engineering, it was the best place for me to grow and be confident in my community.
How has the FOSSI program benefited you in your college experience?
The scholarship provides money, which relieves a huge burden, but more than that, it provides the tools for success, including financial literacy, networking opportunities and resume building. It also paired me with a sponsor company.
My sponsor, DuPont, awarded me with a mentor and being able to learn from someone who is working in the field that I want to work in, is something that most freshmen don’t get to do.
How was your internship with your FOSSI sponsor company?
After my sophomore year, I accepted an internship with DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware and it was really great. They gave me a stipend to move and they also helped me find a place to stay during my internship. I had a mentor that helped me with my project, and I had a great manager. I was excited to have the chance to start my engineering career and build my network. DuPont is like a family and we’re still connected after only spending two months together.
How is your junior year going?
Classes are a little tough but I love my school and I have great teachers, tutors, and a strong community to study with.
What advice would you give to younger scholars?
As soon as you get to campus, get out of your comfort zone. Meet lots of new people, join organizations that don’t necessarily align with your major. Find out what you like and don’t like, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
