Meet Jeremy Watson: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending Alabama State University

April 28, 2025

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Jeremy Watson, and I'm from the small city of Monroeville, AL. I graduated high school as the 2024 salutatorian on May 16. I served as class president and was involved in organizations like the National Honor Society, Key Club, Beta Club, and Peer Mentors. I’m the middle child of my parents, and I’m currently attending Alabama State University, where I’m majoring in mechanical engineering.

I learned that engineers are responsible for many aspects of modern society, such as transportation, communication, energy, health, and security, and I want to be a part of that.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

My interest in engineering started as a child, playing with Lego bricks and building various structures and models. I enjoyed experimenting with different shapes, colors, and functions, and I was curious about how things worked and how to make them better. As I grew older, I realized that engineering is not just about creating cool gadgets and machines but also about solving real-world problems and improving people's lives. I learned that engineers are responsible for many aspects of modern society, such as transportation, communication, energy, health, and security, and I want to be a part of that.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Receiving this scholarship has meant the world to me. It has given me the opportunity to attend college without my parents having to worry about the financial burden of my success. I am grateful that I will be able to graduate college debt-free. This has motivated me to give back to my community once I am in the workforce after college.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

My mother is my role model. She has motivated me to be the best version of myself and pushed me in school so I could believe in my abilities. She sacrifices so much for me and my brothers, and I couldn’t be prouder to call her mom. My mother taught me that not every day will be good, but to always find something good in each day.
