FOSSI Scholars Launch First-Ever Student Chapter at N.C. A&T

On March 19, 2025, history was made at North Carolina A&T State University as FOSSI scholars came together to host the inaugural event for the university’s very first FOSSI student chapter. The event brought together more than 50 scholars for an afternoon filled with inspiration, connection, and momentum for the future.

The scholars behind the chapter

The idea for a student chapter began with four committed FOSSI scholars: Ambrose Kee, Gianni Phillips, Kaila White, and Liyah Wilson. Rather than taking on individual titles, the founding team worked as a collective, sharing responsibilities, vision, and the desire to create something lasting for their peers.

“For us, the goal was simple,” said Ambrose Kee. “We wanted every FOSSI scholar on N.C. A&T’s campus to feel part of a thriving community—one rooted in mentorship, volunteerism, and mutual support.”

Gianni added that while many students benefitted from virtual programming during the COVID-19 era, the return to campus highlighted a need for more in-person community building. “Despite the strong presence of FOSSI scholars at N.C. A&T, we lacked a centralized network. This chapter was created to bridge that gap.”

Bringing the vision to life

Months of planning went into the chapter’s first event. “This has been in the works since October,” said Liyah Wilson, who served as the panel moderator. “Seeing it finally come to life, with so many scholars engaged and excited, was incredibly rewarding.”

Kaila White shared that the event was especially meaningful for her as a graduating senior. “Just a few years ago, I was in the same place as many of the attendees. Being able to support and pour back into the next generation of scholars felt like a full-circle moment.”

For Gianni, it was a surreal experience. “This initiative has been a vision of mine for years—something I talked about with Adrienne and shared countless times with friends and family. To see it come to life was amazing.”

Highlights from the panel

The student-led panel featured six FOSSI scholars who opened up about their internship journeys and how they’ve leveraged the FOSSI network. Panelists touched on the power of mentorship, the importance of confidence when interacting with corporate sponsors, and how FOSSI offers more than just financial support—it’s a launchpad for career success.

“There was so much value in the stories shared,” said Liyah. “Some talked about meeting CEOs, others shared how they landed their internships. It made it clear that being a FOSSI scholar comes with unique opportunities.”

Feedback from fellow scholars

Across the board, feedback from attendees was enthusiastic. Students expressed appreciation for the chance to meet other FOSSI scholars, ask questions about internships, and get involved in something new and meaningful on campus.

“We heard a lot of excitement about what’s next,” said Ambrose. “People were already asking how they could help, how to stay involved, and what events were coming up.”

What’s next for the chapter

While the founding team members are in different stages of their college journeys, their vision remains unified: building a space where scholars can grow professionally, give back to the community, and form lasting connections.

The chapter’s next steps include volunteer initiatives, social events, and deeper engagement with FOSSI’s corporate sponsors. As Kaila noted, “We want to create opportunities that support both career and community development.”

How students can get involved

The chapter has already selected its first Executive Board, but there are still plenty of ways to engage. Interested students can attend upcoming events, join community service initiatives, or simply follow along online.

“We’re always posting updates on our Instagram,” said Ambrose. “Whether you’re looking to connect, give back, or learn more, there’s a place for you in this community.”
