Meet Travis Rivers: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

March 28, 2025

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Travis Rivers, I'm 18 years old, and critical thinking is important to me. I have always been dedicated and hardworking, and my drive to succeed, along with my commitment to my studies, has been the key to my success. I am grateful for the people, challenges, and experiences that have shaped me. I have participated in programs such as the Virginia Earth System Science Scholars, Jack and Jill of America Inc., Kappa League, Young Diplomats, 100 Black Men, and Toastmasters. I have also been involved in extracurriculars, including the Ecology Club, Robotics Club, National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and the Cooperating Hampton Roads Organizations for Minorities in Engineering Club.

I am determined to break barriers, succeed in mechanical engineering, and make a positive impact on the world—inspiring other Black engineers to pursue their dreams and continue breaking down barriers.

These opportunities have enabled me to excel academically, grow personally, help at food banks, mentor students, contribute to environmental clean-ups, and provide resources to those in need. I served as the president of my school’s Ecology Club, and my experiences there, like many others, have shaped my mindset. I am deeply committed to making a difference and striving for a better future.

I plan to study mechanical engineering at North Carolina A&T State University, use mechanical engineering to solve complex problems, and eventually establish a successful company that will benefit my community and beyond. I am determined to work hard to achieve my goals of positively impacting the world.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

My desire to pursue mechanical engineering comes from my passion for creating and improving things, both for myself and others. Since I was young, I have developed my creativity and problem-solving skills, which led me to choose a career in mechanical engineering. My goal is to use my strategic planning, creativity, and problem-solving abilities to positively influence and inspire others.

Additionally, as an African American, I know about the underrepresentation of Black individuals in this field, with fewer than 5% of mechanical engineers being Black. I am determined to break barriers, succeed in mechanical engineering, and make a positive impact on the world—inspiring other Black engineers to pursue their dreams and continue breaking down barriers.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I make a conscious effort to recycle and inform others of the importance of recycling.
  • I was the president of my high school’s Ecology Club.
