Meet Caitlyn Thompson: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending Howard University

February 24, 2025

Caitlyn Thompson is a first-year student at Howard University, where she is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. Originally from Houston, Texas, she graduated in the top 15% of her class from the High School of Performing and Visual Arts. With the balance of analytical thinking and artistic expression, Caitlyn has seamlessly balanced her passions for dance, STEM, and community outreach. At Howard, she is an active member of the university’s chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Bringing a creative lens to her work, Caitlyn will continue to embody her passion for finding innovative solutions and making a meaningful impact in her communities.

In ten years, I hope to actively influence the field of sustainability. It is my goal to work in maximizing the efficiency of water filtration and treatment methods.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

I have been lucky enough to have many positive influences in my life. The Black women in my life have had a profound impact on how I operate within my world. My grandmother, Jaquelyn Arscott, has been a phenomenal role model for me. She was a high school teacher and growing up I would accompany her on her errands. Every place we entered, we exited having seen one of the students she taught. In many interactions, the student would always exclaim how she changed their lives. Seeing how much love and change she has put into the world constantly encourages me to embody those same ideals. My grandmother has endured so much in her 78 years. However, she still manages to work tirelessly and lead with love and compassion. Standing strong in her beliefs, my grandmother has been influential in the development of my own. I am forever grateful to have grown up with Jaquelyn Arscott as a role model.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I hope to actively influence the field of sustainability. It is my goal to work in maximizing the efficiency of water filtration and treatment methods. In addition to a career in sustainability, I see myself volunteering in my community and maintaining my involvement in organizations like NSBE and AIChE to provide younger generations with opportunities like the ones I have been so honored to receive.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I have 15 years of classical dance training.
  •  I love doing puzzles and reading in my past time.
  •  I enjoy thrifting and shopping at flea markets.
