FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi! my name is Catori Ward and I am currently a freshman at Tennessee State University, majoring in chemistry. I graduated from Harvest Preparatory in Columbus, Ohio. During my high school career, I was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, a soccer player, a member of a women’s empowerment group, and an active volunteer. In my downtime, I enjoy spending time with my family, going to church, working out, hanging with friends, and volunteering. Earning this scholarship and becoming a FOSSI scholar is important to me because it gives me the opportunity to get a good education and reach for my goals. I am more than thrilled to be among the FOSSI class of 2024 scholarship recipients and I'm ready to change the world!
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
Growing up, I was always filled with curiosity and wonder. Each Christmas, I’d ask for things such as microscopes, science kits, and labs to do at home with my family. When I began high school, I discovered my passion for chemistry. I enjoyed every aspect of learning the periodic table, chemical bonding, and balancing equations. I loved the science behind the labs and always enjoyed putting on lab coats and goggles. Since my sophomore year, I knew chemistry was meant for me. Looking forward, I plan to major in chemistry and start my journey to becoming a cosmetic chemist. I then plan to develop a new line of cosmetics that are cruelty-free and made with organic, plant-based ingredients. In addition, I aspire to develop highly effective skin care products that increase overall skin health and wellness of African American women like myself.
FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
- In my free time, I enjoy taking walks and experiencing nature.
- I started my own baking business at the age of 12, sparking my entrepreneurial spirit!
- English and science have always been my two favorite subjects.
- I love being able to travel with my family and make new memories. Being able to view the world and try new things brings me joy.
