Four Years With FOSSI: A Timeline of the Impact LyondellBasell Has on the Future of STEM

November 2024 marks four years since LyondellBasell (LYB) began its collaboration with the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI). LYB is proud to be a committed partner to this impactful initiative, having awarded more than $1M to support 35 FOSSI scholars since joining the program in 2020. Here's a look back at the evolution of LYB's partnership with FOSSI and how their collaboration continues to shape the future of STEM. 

2020–2021: Joining Forces

Recognizing a lack of diversity throughout the STEM workforce, in November 2020, the American Chemistry Council (ACC), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours, and HBCU Week Foundation partnered to establish the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI). This national industrywide program seeks to increase the number of underrepresented professionals in the STEM workforce by providing scholarships to students pursuing STEM degrees at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Partnering with FOSSI aligns with LYB's core values: championing people, striving for excellence, and shaping the future. In 2021, LYB took on their first 10 scholars, offering not just tuition-based scholarships, but also career guidance with educational seminars for the students. LYB also sent scholars care packages to further show their encouragement and support throughout the school year.

2022–2023: Expanding Mentorship and Support

By 2022, the relationship between FOSSI and LYB deepened as LYB continued to fund additional FOSSI scholars, reinforcing their commitment to building partnerships.  Also, LYB employees took on an active role by mentoring scholars through their academic journeys and providing them with real-world insights. 

LYB FOSSI mentors reflect on the program

“Being a part of the LYB FOSSI mentoring programs has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career,” said Marlon Green, HR manager, corporate functions. “Through the FOSSI program, I have had the opportunity to serve as a role model and demonstrate what a successful career can look like, which inspires students to aim high in their respective fields. My experience as a FOSSI mentor has been more than just giving advice, I have had the opportunity to learn more about the STEM field, build new relationships and foster growth within myself.” 

“Growing up with an engineer as a father, I was fortunate to have a strong mentor and supporter throughout my life and career,” said Erin Kerr, Workstream Leader, Strategic Initiative. “I joined the FOSSI program to provide that same guidance and support to students who may not have that mentor. I thoroughly enjoy my conversations with my mentee. We share our experiences and I help her navigate her own path in engineering.”

2024: Celebrating Four Years of Impact

In 2024, FOSSI scholars made an impact at LYB through cooperative opportunities. These experiences solidified their commitment to pursuing a career in STEM fields.

LYB FOSSI scholars discuss their co-op experiences

My overall experience as a FOSSI LYB scholar has been invaluable as I have gotten the chance to reach a pivotal step in my professional development and learn so much about industrial plant life in such a short amount of time,” said Catherine-Jolie Tabe, a fall 2024 co-op. “My co-op role is at the Bayport Polymer Plant (BYO) as a Reliability and Mechanical Maintenance Engineer. In my role, I have been challenged to initiate the management of change (MOC) process for some new pumps and seals for the screw conveyor shaft, and tasked with designing an automated mean-time between-repair report for all of the site’s machinery, all to enhance BYO's reliability! Working with such an intelligent and insightful team has been the most significant part. I love BYO’s family environment and determination to be safe and successful.”

“Initially, I was uncertain about the opportunities available for a mechanical engineer at LYB,” said Ariel Wilcox, another fall 2024 co-op. “However, my perspective shifted once I began the co-op experience. So far, it has been groundbreaking for my personal growth. I encountered many new experiences and challenges that I hadn't yet faced in my college experience, and it has altered my mindset. This is in no way easy, but getting to see what role a mechanical engineer can play at a chemical plant with the skills that we learn in our major is certainly enlightening. I am grateful to be able to see this side of the manufacturing industry so early in my college career.”
