Meet Elijah Hodges: FOSSI's First Graduate

November 26, 2024

In May 2024, Elijah Hodges made history as the first FOSSI scholar to graduate from the program, achieving Summa Cum Laude honors with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Florida A&M University in Computer Information Systems. We caught up with Elijah to discuss his incredible journey, how the FOSSI scholarship shaped his success, and his advice for aspiring scholars. Dive into his inspiring story below!

FOSSI: Could you share a few highlights about your time at Florida A&M University? Did anything surprise you about college life?

Elijah: One of the main highlights of attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) was the opportunity to immerse myself in my culture and experience a profound sense of belonging. Meeting and connecting with many successful individuals of color was incredibly inspiring and motivating. Being part of such a large and vibrant community filled with shared energy, ambition, and tradition was heartwarming and uplifting, making my time at FAMU truly unforgettable. Another highlight was participating in the Black Enterprise Smart Hackathons—one of which led to winning 25,000 AAdvantage miles from American Airlines.

FOSSI: How did the FOSSI Scholarship impact your experience at Florida A&M University?

Elijah: The FOSSI Scholarship was instrumental in relieving financial stress, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my academics and pursue my degree without distraction. With this support, I was able to achieve and maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my college journey, ultimately graduating Summa Cum Laude. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity the scholarship provided, as it allowed me to excel in all my classes and grow both personally and professionally. Having access to mentorship and guidance whenever needed was incredibly reassuring and impactful. Meetings like the Personal Finance 101 session were also beneficial, equipping me with the tools to manage both my career and personal life effectively.

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about your life after graduating.

Elijah: I am currently working as a software developer at CSX as part of their year-long Leadership Development Program (LDP). The program is designed to help participants strengthen their leadership skills through a blend of top-notch training, hands-on experience, and immersive opportunities within CSX’s culture. During the program, I’ve had the chance to interact with company leaders, participate in structured and on-the-job training, and contribute to meaningful projects. These experiences have helped equip me with the knowledge and skills to thrive within the company and grow as a professional. My goal is to continue excelling in my role at CSX and work toward becoming one of the top programmers in the organization.

FOSSI: How has your FOSSI mentorship and/or internship experience(s) prepared you for life after college?

Elijah: My 2023 summer internship with CSX was pivotal in preparing me for life after college. It provided a glimpse into corporate life and helped me understand what to expect as a full-time professional. Collaborating with a senior development team and fellow interns on fast-paced projects significantly enhanced my leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. As a full-time employee at CSX, the transition has been seamless, and I am continually learning and developing new skills each week.

FOSSI: What advice would you give to current and future FOSSI scholars looking to jump into a successful career after graduating?

Elijah: My best advice is to prioritize securing an internship that aligns with your career goals. Internships are invaluable—they provide hands-on experience, strengthen your resume, and establish meaningful connections within your industry. If you excel during your internship, the company is more likely to remember your name and consider you for future opportunities, giving you a significant advantage when applying for full-time roles.

In addition to internships, maintaining a strong GPA is essential. While meeting the scholarship’s minimum requirements is important, striving for the highest GPA possible can set you apart from other candidates in competitive job markets.

Finally, don’t forget to enjoy your college experience. Foster meaningful connections, make lifelong friends, and cherish these moments—you won’t get this time back. College is about personal and professional growth, so make the most of it.
