On November 6, 2024, Southern University and A&M College – Baton Rouge, LA, welcomed Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) scholars to the Valdry Center for Philanthropy for an engaging Career Readiness Workshop. This event equipped students with essential skills and strategies needed for success in their future careers, focusing on networking, effective communication, and career preparedness.

Southern University, in collaboration with FOSSI sponsor Sasol Chemicals, organized the workshop to bring together industry experts and academic leaders who guided students through their professional development. Dr. Nicole J. Moncrief, Strategic Human Resources Business Partner at Sasol Chemicals, and Tamara Montgomery, Executive Director of the Career Services Center at Southern University, took the lead in developing an agenda that focused on essential skills and resources tailored to enhance the career readiness of the FOSSI scholars.
Montogomery highlights the importance of professional etiquette
During the workshop, Montgomery delivered a compelling presentation on networking and engaging with potential employers, where she highlighted the significance of professional etiquette and introduced students to various resources offered by the Career Services Center. Participants gained valuable insights into effective resume writing, interview preparation, and appropriate dress for professional settings.
In addition, Montgomery showcased the Center's offerings, including personalized resume reviews and access to platforms like Handshake, which connects students with potential employers. She also discussed how the Center supports students facing financial hardships by providing essential resources for interview readiness.
Dr. Moncrief emphasizes Sasol's commitment to empowering future STEM leaders
Throughout the session, Dr. Moncrief encouraged scholars to fully utilize the available resources, emphasizing the importance of exploring professional development opportunities and building relationships with companies seeking top talent.

As a part of the workshop, students actively participated by asking thoughtful questions about securing internships and connecting with potential employers. The event also featured a networking dinner, where attendees forged connections with industry professionals. Each student received a professional headshot and unique Sasol-branded items, enhancing their experience.
