FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself

Hello, My name is Nyael Jones. I am a rising freshman at Florida Agriculture & Mechanical University, majoring in Biological Systems Engineering. I started a business at 17 called More to Give, sparked by my passion for communal work.  I'm also passionate about the performing arts. I graduated in the top 1% of my high school class and was honored as a student leader in my district.

With the support of this scholarship, I would be able to continue to make an impact on the world.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

My goal is to find a career that allows me to problem-solve and develop innovative ways to combat environmental issues. I want to heighten my knowledge of the ecosystem and help apply my expertise to large companies. My insights and creativity would be used to develop new pathways toward sustainability. With a new movement for environmental concern, I believe that more companies will soon have to connect with innovative technology and strategies for overall progression. I have an interest in business and implementing environmental strategies while striving for maximum growth. A degree in Biological Systems Engineering will be an amazing start in my journey to achieve my career goals.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

I am raised by my single mother who is supporting a household on her own. As the sole provider for my family, she works tireless hours to make sure our basic needs are being met. This scholarship would ease the financial burden on my mother to put me through school and pursue my career. Unfortunately, my father left our family at a young age and has not been around to financially support us. With the support of this scholarship, I would be able to continue to make an impact on the world.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I enjoy singing and discovered this in my youth choir at church.
  • I have 3 favorite colors which are purple, teal, and yellow.
  • I will be the 3rd generation to attend my HBCU.
  • My top three female artists are Fantasia, Jekalyn Carr, and Nicki Minaj.
