Meet Carol Akpan: 2021 FOSSI Scholar Attending Prairie View A&M University

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself. 

Hello, my name is Carol, and I am a Junior at Prairie View A&M University studying for my Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a bio concentration. I am the president of The National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) and a REU research assistant at my university. 

I am passionate about my journey to attain a STEM degree, driven by my fascination with the endless opportunities that the field of chemical engineering presents.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I am passionate about my journey to attain a STEM degree, driven by my fascination with the endless opportunities that the field of chemical engineering presents. I truly thrive on unraveling intricate challenges within chemistry and mathematics. Consequently, I believe that chemical engineering is the ideal path for me.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Receiving the FOSSI scholarship holds importance for me because of its visionary mission for students at HBCUs. The vast expanse of opportunities within the STEM field is truly remarkable. It's also reassuring to know that FOSSI is offering support to enable our career progression.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

My hobbies include art, archery, baking, watching movies, outdoor activities, photography, traveling to tropical locations,  and spending time with my three sisters and two dogs.
