We are honored to partner with the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) to support our commitment and offer STEM students attending HBCUs $10,000 in annual scholarships. Additionally, we provide scholars with internship opportunities to equip them with practical industry experience. As part of this initiative, students are paired with mentors at Kraton who offer valuable career guidance throughout their academic journey. Gianni Phillips, a FOSSI scholar and chemistry major at North Carolina A&T State University, had the opportunity to intern with Kraton for two consecutive years. We have invited Gianni to share her insights and experiences as a FOSSI scholar with Kraton.
What sparked your interest in pursuing a STEM degree?
I am deeply passionate about pursuing a STEM degree because science is a crucial tool for comprehending the intricacies of our universe. I firmly believe that science is about questioning the known and discovering the unknown to enhance our world’s understanding of life itself. Chemistry holds a special place in my heart as it forms the foundational underpinning of all scientific disciplines, starting from the tiniest atoms that make up our world.
Can you describe your overall experience with the FOSSI initiative?
My overall experience with the FOSSI initiative has been enriching. Through FOSSI, I’ve had the 
opportunity to acquire essential career insights through virtual training sessions and engaging discussions that have contributed to both my personal and professional growth. FOSSI has also provided me with valuable career prospects by facilitating my connection with Kraton, where I’ve had the privilege to partake in summer internships and year-long mentoring programs. The impact of FOSSI on my life has been nothing short of pivotal.
How has having Kraton as a corporate sponsor and interning with them over the past two summers contributed to your growth?
Having Kraton as my corporate sponsor has been an exceptional experience. Kraton has given me a sense of belonging, and I genuinely feel like a part of their extended family. Unlike traditional internships, where tasks were often mundane, at Kraton, I was entrusted with significant responsibilities and had the opportunity to take initiative on the projects I worked on. This made me feel like a valued team member and taught me invaluable skills. I improved teamwork, interpersonal, and technical skills, especially in chemistry. They equipped me with a practical understanding of applying classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios, boosting my confidence to contribute effectively to the STEM field and setting the stage for continued development. My time at Kraton enabled me to forge lasting connections that I know will be influential throughout my career.
In what ways do you see yourself contributing to the future of STEM fields, and how has FOSSI or Kraton played a role in shaping these ambitions?
I aim to contribute to STEM’s future through research, innovation, and mentorship, with FOSSI and Kraton as significant influences. FOSSI’s scholarship at North Carolina A&T State University ignited my passion for STEM. Kraton has provided invaluable hands-on experience through two enriching summer internships, equipping me with essential technical skills and a commitment to mentorship. I aim to advance scientific knowledge, mentor the next generation, and give back, following FOSSI and Kraton’s support.
What advice would you give future FOSSI scholars based on your experience from the initiative?
I advise future FOSSI scholars to seize every opportunity from FOSSI and your corporate sponsor. These experiences will enhance your knowledge and real-world STEM understanding. Build relationships, embrace challenges, and keep your passion alive to fuel your curiosity and motivation. Lastly, be open to mentorship. My Kraton mentor has been instrumental in my development, guiding me through challenges and providing support in all aspects of my life.
