Meet Joshua Harrison: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Jackson State University

January 10, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Joshua Harrison and I'm from Hamilton, MS. In the fall, I'll be attending Jackson State University as a Biomedical Engineering major. I'm very active, I enjoy working out and my siblings and I have been involved in athletics for most of our lives.

Time spent with family is important to me, and my grandparents are the jewels of my heart. I use the inspiration from my maternal grandfather as fuel for who I am and who I will become. I believe I have the ability to foster changes that will help people live healthier and happier lives.

I have the desire to make a difference in this world and helping people is my purpose.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I have watched my maternal grandfather battle medical illness until death. My maternal grandmother has battled and survived breast cancer. As a young black man that has seen the lack of health care innovations in the area I live, I believe I have a unique vantage point that can add to the development of improved health care techniques to reach a greater number of people; especially people that live in rural areas. I believe that STEM is the future of healthcare.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Receiving this scholarship is a tremendous opportunity. This scholarship allows me the chance to make my dreams a reality. I have the desire to make a difference in this world and helping people is my purpose. This scholarship is a huge financial blessing because my desires and my financial ability have not always been congruent. These funds make it possible to attend a leading HBCU and pursue my interest in science and technology.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

My maternal grandfather is my greatest influence. He was an entrepreneur and a leader. Growing up, he didn't have an easy life, as he was the youngest of five siblings and began working at age twelve to help his single mother.  Before graduating, he left the south, and secured a job in the steel mills by day and drove cabs by night. In his "spare time," he worked on industrial washers and dryers.

He returned to the south with a wife and two small children, obtained his GED, and went to work for one of the largest chemical corporations in our area, Kerr McGee (Tronox). He then went on to own his own dirtwork and trucking business and eventually became active in real estate. He was always learning, teaching, and constantly encouraging me. His belief in me continues to inspire me, and his impact has lasted far beyond his time on this earth. I carry his hopes and dreams, and I adopted his work ethic.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I intend to own and operate my own corporation. I plan to be working to build stronger communities and giving back in ways that inspires others to reach higher heights. I would also like to be able to help others reach their goals and give others the opportunity that this scholarship is affording me.
