While visiting her family in Nashville, Bridget Ray-Canada, Director & BRM Digital Supply Chain Manager at Cabot, Spelman graduate and fabulous FOSSI mentor, took the opportunity to meet two of Cabot’s extraordinary FOSSI scholars at Tennessee State University; Ryan Johnson and Walter Howell. Ryan is a junior and a civil engineering major from Livonia, Michigan. Walter is a sophomore and a mechanical engineering major from Louisville, Kentucky.
Bridget gets to know Cabot's FOSSI scholars
In getting to know the students, Bridget learned some fun facts about them. On the topic of food allergies, she mentioned "Ryan has never tasted cheesecake. She has allergies to certain ingredients, but she loves sorbets. I do too!"
She also learned about Walter's siblings and shared "Walter is a triplet. Wow, three kids in college! Talk about hurting your wallet. Walter and one of his brothers are both mechanical engineering majors and his other brother is a health science major. Awesome!"
Ryan and Walter also shared that they are humbled and grateful for the FOSSI program and scholarship, and how they truly appreciate Cabot's engagement with them.
More about FOSSI's sponsor company, Cabot
Cabot has 15 FOSSI Scholars on campus this fall. Their BEAU (Black Employees and Allies United) ERG (Employee Resource Group) works with the HR D&I (Diversity & Inclusion) team to engage with FOSSI scholars as well as assign them Cabot mentors. Ray-Canada noted, “This is important work as we take action to address the lack of diversity throughout the STEM workforce. Many college students do not have the privilege or opportunity to participate in a program like FOSSI. I am proud that Cabot is a participating company which allows me to share my wisdom and insights to pay it forward. I am reminded of the scripture, ‘So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t give up’ Galatians 6:9.”
We invite companies not currently supporting FOSSI to build their pipeline of outstanding and diverse talent by supporting a FOSSI scholar. Learn more.
