FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Da’More Shorter, and I'm from Tampa, Florida.I enjoy going to church, traveling, and dancing ballet, jazz, hip-hop, African and lyrical. I also enjoy modeling and acting. Throughout highschool, my favorite subjects were math and science, and I was captain of the girl's varsity basketball team, a marching band dancer, a flag football team member, and co-captain of the girl's volleyball team. I was also a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, The National Society of High School Scholars, The Student Government, and a member of Precious Pearls Youth Group. Volunteering, working with children and helping others in need, are activities I thoroughly enjoy. In my downtime, I like to paint and play the cello instrument.
I am honored and grateful to be one of the 2023 FOSSI Scholarship recipients. My goal and purpose in life is to encourage and uplift others with positive energy, and make a difference in the world.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
I plan to pursue a STEM education and ultimately become a Biomedical Engineer. My STEM education will give me the tools needed to make me employable and ready to meet the job demands of the workforce. I will have the opportunity to engage with experts from diverse fields working toward change in our society. I feel I am a well-rounded individual; my interests and skills extend beyond STEM, but I found that my passion for it has made me a better person overall.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
My third-grade teacher Mr. Thompson was always encouraging his students to dream big and think outside the box. He would always ask the classroom of third graders, “do you want to be a fry shaker or a decision maker?". I decided to be a decision maker, and that stuck with me throughout my elementary, middle, and high school years. I am ever so grateful that he taught me more than just the normal curriculum of studies; he also taught life lessons that I will carry throughout my life.
