FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Dustin Davis and I attended Junipero Serra High, a Catholic school in Gardena, CA. Prior to high school, I've always attended STEM magnet schools, which is where my passion for math and science originated. Grasping and understanding mathematical problems comes to me effortlessly and I’m naturally intrigued with science and innovation. When choosing my college major, there was no doubt in my mind that it would be engineering.
My goal is to play an intricate part in the advancement of technology.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
STEM education has the power to both improve our environment and raise public awareness. I look forward to growing up and having a career that I will not only love, but one that will also provide many rewards and opportunities. My goal is to play an intricate part in the advancement of technology.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
My mother and I have spent our entire lives together, just she and I. She works two full-time jobs to
support us and pay for me to attend a private school so I could receive a better education than she did. I’ve been working part-time for the past couple of years to help relieve some of her financial pressure. I plan to attend Hampton University, but I know it won’t be feasible unless I can obtain scholarships to help cover my tuition.
I am very grateful for this scholarship, as it will put me one step closer to my dream of pursuing a fulfilling career and eventually being able to assist a young person who is in a similar circumstance. I want to show my mother how much I value her hard work and the sacrifices she’s made to raise me. If given the chance, I also want to demonstrate how valuable the contributions of the FOSSI program were to my education.
FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
- Most people would say I am a very chill and laidback.
- I'm an only child, so I love hanging out with my friends whenever I can.
- I get along with everyone and I am a very social person once I get comfortable.
