FOSSI: Could you share a few highlights about your first few semesters at North Carolina A&T State?

Since being on campus at North Carolina A&T State University, I learned so much about myself and even began to step outside of my comfort zone a little. During these few semesters, I was blessed to be offered so many opportunities through FOSSI and by networking with people on campus.

FOSSI: How has the FOSSI Scholarship impacted your experience at North Carolina A&T State University?

The FOSSI Scholarship impacted my experience at NCAT by helping me connect with companies like Dow Chemical. This connection led to my first internship, which took place at their headquarters in Midland, Michigan. While in Michigan, I worked in their analytical chemistry lab and worked with fellow scientist as they conducted some groundbreaking research. This connection also led to me representing Dow Chemical at the Annual AIChE Gala in New York City.

How are your studies going – what are the biggest challenges and what do you like most?

My studies as a chemistry major are going well. The work is difficult, as expected, but through going to office hours and collaborating with fellow students, I know that it will all work out.

What extra-curricular activities are you enjoying on campus?

I am enjoying doing community service throughout the Greensboro area and especially working with my school’s Chemistry Club, as we host new fun and engaging events.

FOSSI: Tell us about your experience interning with your FOSSI sponsor company.

In the summer of 2022, I participated in an internship with my FOSSI sponsor, Dow Chemical, in Midland, Michigan. Through my work in their analytical chemistry lab, I learned how to operate both a Gas Chromatography (GS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), which are the two common machines used to analyze their test samples.

During this experience, I worked on various projects regarding the recycling to plastics as well as the digestion of certain chemicals in rats. Aside from the work in the lab, I was able to learn a lot about the company as a whole and even had the opportunity to meet the CEO of Dow Chemical, Jim Fitterling.

We invite companies not currently supporting FOSSI to build their pipeline of outstanding and diverse talent by supporting a FOSSI scholar. Learn more.
