FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Xavier Jackson. I am from Grand Prairie, Texas, and I am 18 years old. In the fall, I will be attending Prairie View A&M University and I plan to major in chemistry.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
I discovered a love for science in elementary school and since then, it's continued to grow. I have taken advanced science classes since the 5th grade. Throughout high school, I took Pre-AP Biology, Pre-AP Chemistry, Physics, and Aquatic Science. I had the opportunity to participate in various science labs, activities, and projects that were very interesting to me.
I am eager to learn more about science and explore other areas in science that I didn't get a chance to study in high school. My favorite high school science lab was dissecting a frog in my 9th-grade biology class, and my most challenging course was chemistry.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
The FOSSI scholarship is helping to close the financial gap for me to attend college, making college more affordable, and helping me attain my educational goals.
I am also excited about the mentorship and internship aspects of the program. Connecting with others in the STEM field and gaining experience while working towards my degree is essential.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
My parents are my role models. They have always supported my efforts and modeled great work ethic and determination. They have always encouraged me to do my best and to be the best person I can be.
FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years, I see myself working in forensics with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
- I have a dog named Zeus.
- I was a two-sport athlete (football and track) throughout high school.
- I like to play video games.
- I was awarded District 11 6A Honorable Mention Inside Linebacker for the 2021 football season.
