FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Travis, and I have embarked on my journey as a mechanical engineering major at Alabama A&M University. Originally from South Florida, I call northern Virginia home! I am a graduate of Freedom High School where I spent three years as a member of the varsity track and field team. Athletics have been a significant part of my high school experience, teaching me invaluable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. I'm grateful for the friendships forged and the skills honed during my time on the track team. Beyond sports, I find joy in spending quality time with my family, exploring new outdoor adventures, working out and occasionally cooking. I'm an avid learner, constantly seeking knowledge through reading and exploring diverse content on platforms like YouTube. From science and technology to philosophy and culture, I find inspiration in understanding different perspectives and ideas.
I am drawn to the idea that within STEM, there exists the potential to innovate and implement ideas that can address pressing issues such as climate change, healthcare disparities, technological accessibility, and sustainable development.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
STEM offers solutions to a vast majority of the problems we face today and provides a framework for tackling diverse problems that affect our societies, environments, and economies. I am drawn to the idea that within STEM, there exists the potential to innovate and implement ideas that can address pressing issues such as climate change, healthcare disparities, technological accessibility, and sustainable development. These disciplines not only offer practical tools and methodologies but also foster a mindset of critical thinking and problem-solving that is essential for navigating complex challenges. I believe that pursuing a degree in the STEM field will warrant me opportunities to help solve issues of the world. I've learned from many creators in STEM that there are always many options for how to help the world, and I plan on using that creativity to do so.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
There are a multitude of reasons why receiving the FOSSI scholarship is important. However, my highest priority was lowering the burden of debt. My main focus was cutting down on student debt, especially after watching my mother work so hard to pay back hers. Throughout my years in high school, many teachers expressed to me how expensive and daunting their student loans were. I wanted to take any opportunity I had to receive money for college to avoid that in my future. Receiving this scholarship has awarded me the chance to enter college with one less issue.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
My father and grandfather! I also absorb inspiration from successful men such as international sports Hall of Famer, David Goggins, Steve Jobs, and other men who use the power of their mind to take control of their destiny.
