FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jaylah C. May Israel, and I am a 17-year-old Williamstown, New Jersey, resident. As a licensed cosmetologist, my ultimate goal is to pursue a career as a cosmetic chemist, blending my passion for beauty and science. In pursuit of this dream, I have decided to further my education at Delaware State University, where I will be majoring in chemistry and minoring in marketing. This academic path will provide me with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field of cosmetic chemistry and eventually make a significant impact in the beauty industry.
My ultimate goal is to create a cosmetic brand that not only encourages younger generations to embrace their natural hair and skin, but also provides them with safe and accessible Black-owned products.
Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
The success stories of Black women like Tracee Ellis Ross, with her beauty line PATTERN, and Rihanna, with Fenty Beauty, have truly inspired me to pursue my education in the field of cosmetology. As I approach graduation and obtain my license, I find myself pondering what lies ahead. The path that awaits me involves entering the STEM field and becoming a cosmetic chemist. My ultimate goal is to create a cosmetic brand that not only encourages younger generations to embrace their natural hair and skin, but also provides them with safe and accessible Black-owned products. I am excited to embark on this journey and make a positive impact in the beauty industry.
Who is a role model that has influenced you?
Madam CJ Walker is an influential figure I learned about during my first year of high school. As the first self-made woman millionaire and a creator of a hair care line, she has shown me the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation. Every day, I look up to her achievements and honor what she has done for this industry. Her knowledge of chemistry qualified her to be able to launch a homemade line of hair products. Therefore, I intend to gain a thorough understanding of chemistry to develop products for afro-textured hair and darker skin as a cosmetic chemist.
