FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, my name is Brice Peeler. I am from Pittsburgh, PA, but I was born in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. I recently graduated from Penn Hills High School, where I was a class valedictorian. I was also involved in many extracurricular activities, including being a member of the Varsity Basketball Team, National Honor Society, Black Student Union, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and served as Class Treasurer. I am currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at North Carolina A&T State University.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
Through my mother’s giving spirit, I learned compassion for others and the importance of helping people in my community.
I am passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM field because I have had a strong love for math since since I was young, and I want to create machines that can assist people. My uncle, who has been bedridden due to a debilitating stroke, has been a key inspiration to me. His condition made me start thinking about ways to help people like him through the creation of machines.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
Receiving the FOSSI scholarship is important for me because I am in need of financial assistance for college due to the rising costs. I also have an older sister who is currently attending college, and paying for two students will be tough for my parents. I want to minimize my debt burden upon graduation so I can focus on my career and be in a position to thrive instead of just survive.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
My most significant role models are my parents. Since I was little, they always supported me throughout all my endeavors and motivated me to be my best self. Through my mother’s giving spirit, I learned compassion for others and the importance of helping people in my community. My father sparked my desire to start my own business in the future, as he runs his own photography business. Watching how he carries himself and seeing his diligent work ethic on a daily basis has shown me what type of entrepreneur I want to be and the type of man I want to become.
FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?
After college, I plan to work for a leading mechanical engineering company. In ten years, I see myself starting my own business, leveraging my education and work experience.
FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
