Meet Justin Lewis: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending Prairie View A&M University

September 16, 2024

Justin Lewis is a Chemical Engineering major at Prairie View A&M University. In high school, he was involved in various leadership organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and Top Teens of America. He also founded the Black Student Union (BSU) at his predominantly white private school. His passion for engineering has been a driving force since a young age, and he is eager to embark on this journey to make a significant impact on society.

I decided to pursue chemical engineering with a focus on biomedical applications to help underserved black communities.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

From an early age, my passion for engineering was clear. I used to beg my dad to take me to hobby stores for robotics kits, eager to finish them in one night. When COVID hit, I developed an interest in medicine, inspired by the healthcare heroes I saw. This led me to Biomedical Engineering, where I could merge my love for engineering with solving medical challenges. I decided to pursue chemical engineering with a focus on biomedical applications to help underserved black communities. I aim to create affordable and accessible treatment options to address healthcare disparities and ensure everyone gets the care they need.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

I love to try new things and meet new people. A great example of this is when I tried out Taekwondo and made it to a brown belt.
