FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Gabrielle Dennis, and I am from Mobile, Alabama. I am currently a freshman at Tuskegee University pursing chemical engineering. I enjoy reading, being involved in my community, hanging out with family and friends, and listening to music. During my time in high school, I was the valedictorian of my class, and captain of the LeFlore High girl's volleyball and tennis team. I am very hard-working, and I'm excited to start my studies in engineering!
I am passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM- related field, specifically engineering, because engineering is a male-dominated field, and I want to prove that I can thrive in engineering as a black woman.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
I am passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM- related field, specifically engineering, because engineering is a male-dominated field, and I want to prove that I can thrive in engineering as a black woman. Consequently, I'd like to change the opnion of others on women in STEM and encourage other black girls to pursue STEM related degrees.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
A role model that influenced me is my high school statistics teacher, Mrs. Porter. Mrs. Porter, has a degree in electrical engineering and advised me to be fearless in my pursuit of engineering, and be confident in my knowledge, creativity, and drive to succeed. Hearing this from her resonated with me deeply because she had to face the same insinuations. Seeing someone who looks like me accomplish the goal I want to achieve is so encouraging to me. This is why I believe that black girls need to receive this encouragement from someone they can relate to, someone who looks like them, and I would love to become this person for the next generation of black engineers.
