FOSSI scholar Jadon Edwards, a rising sophomore majoring in computer science at Claflin University, had the opportunity to come to Quaker Houghton, his FOSSI sponsor company, for an eight-week internship.
I’m excited to improve my skills in data analytics, aiming to contribute effectively to organizations using data-driven strategies.
Jadon learns real-life applications of data analytics in business
Jadon joined the Digital Information Technology (DIT) team at Quaker Houghton, a leader in industrial process fluids, to explore his passion for data analytics and gain a deeper understanding of how data can drive decisions and improve business processes.
Using Power BI, he built a dashboard displaying a clear view of the team’s ongoing projects, timelines, and distribution across different phases and business units. This visualization enables leaders to see a big-picture view of project status so they can identify what’s on track and what need more attention.
When reflecting on the project, Jadon stated, “It confirmed that I want to pursue a career in data analytics because of its impact and innovation potential in businesses. It also allowed me to see the importance of ongoing learning in the tech industry. Going forward, I’m excited to improve my skills in data analytics, aiming to contribute effectively to organizations using data-driven strategies.”
Pam Nash, a member of the DIT team, worked with Jadon extensively throughout his internship. She said, “Given only a basic introduction to the use of Power BI, Jadon demonstrated initiative by owning the assignment and teaching himself multiple technical features effectively. This was quite impressive! I believe Jadon will be an asset to any future team to which he belongs.”
Jadon reflects on the support that helped him thrive at Quaker Houghton
In addition to building practical skills, Jadon found immense value in the support and guidance from his mentors and other leaders at Quaker Houghton. “Talking with experienced professionals helped me understand the company better and improve my skills,” he said. “Each mentor gave me helpful advice for facing challenges and making decisions, [and] learning from [them] has had a significant impact on my overall development.”
Jadon leaves with a deep appreciation of Quaker Houghton's supportive environment that fosters growth, the guidance that goes beyond career development, and the advice that he will carry with him as he moves forward in his career. He’s grateful that FOSSI’s program made all this possible, observing, “Without the help of FOSSI, I would not have been aware of such a great opportunity!”
Quaker Houghton underscores the importance of a diverse STEM workforce
Melissa Leneis, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Quaker Houghton, highlighted the impact of STEM professionals in an industry driven by innovation. “We’re pleased to partner with FOSSI to offer valuable, on-the-job training for talented students who are currently underrepresented in STEM fields,” Ms. Leneis said. “This program is mutually beneficial in that it engages the next generation in an exploration of potential pathways to rewarding careers and development of critical skills they need to make positive contributions in their communities. At the same time, we, as an organization and our broader industry, benefit from the diversity of thought, experiences, and backgrounds that these students bring to the workplace. They are the future leaders who will break patterns, spark creativity, and offer fresh insights that will ultimately drive advancements and innovation in our industry.”
