Meet Kaedan Hendrix: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending Howard University

August 23, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kaedan Alexavier Hendrix, and I am an 18-year-old graduate of the one and only historic Little Rock Central High. My mother’s name is Latoya Young, I’m an only child, and we currently live in North Little Rock, Arkansas. However, I was born on the Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Both my mother and father proudly served in the Air Force.

With my eyes now set towards my collegiate future, I step forward with a heart full of hope and passion.

Currently, I am a Karsh STEM scholar at the illustrious Howard University! My plan is to obtain my bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with an emphasis in biochemistry, and then secure my doctorate in biomedical engineering. I anticipate college will require an immense amount of work; however, my hard work and dedication will keep me afloat. Throughout my high school career, I have secured four state championship titles in Arkansas Debate. I have led fantastic organizations such as the Black Student Union of Little Rock and the Junior Branch of the Little Rock Central High Junior NAACP branch. Being a champion for a better future has always been my greatest interest, and I plan to spur change in the medical field to the best of my ability.  With my eyes now set towards my collegiate future, I step forward with a heart full of hope and passion.

FOSSI: Who is a role model who has influenced you?

My mother is my greatest influence. While in the military, she served as a paramedic. This experience granted her an immense love for the medical field. After leaving the military to focus on raising her newborn son, my mother enrolled herself in nursing school. For the next decade she would world tirelessly to secure both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing.

Witnessing my mother work so hard to be a real-life superhero caused me to gain some of her courage. She has pushed me to work harder, study more, and aim to be my best self. Without her, I can confidently state that I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now, as I’m preparing for college, I’m attempting to channel some of her heroic fortitude.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

Although my personal hobbies might include running, reading, or playing video games, my absolute favorite thing to do is snorkel. Being immersed in the ocean and witnessing its true beauty is one of the most breathtaking experiences. It’s a shame that I live 400 miles from the nearest beach, as I truly believe that I belong near the sea.

Furthermore, I adore animals. The natural world is one of the most splendid things about life, and being a part of it is an extremely calming activity. Whether it’s hiking, gardening, or swimming, I try and enjoy nature as often as I can.
