Meet Isaiah Charley: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello, my name is Isaiah Charley. I’m 18 years old and a newly enrolled student at North Carolina A&T State University. I’m from a small country town called Nesmith, South Carolina, and I graduated from Hemingway High School in Hemingway, SC.

Some of my hobbies include playing sports, playing musical instruments, cutting hair, engaging with social media, and volunteering in my community.

My future plans are to earn my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, become one of the most well-known engineers in the world, start multiple businesses from the ground up, and give back to my community and others in need.

I feel truly blessed to be in the position I’m in today, and I’m very thankful for the FOSSI scholarship foundation.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

The first time I touched a Lego block was when I was five years old I developed a love for Legos. From then on, I would beg my parents for new sets every chance I got, which helped improve my creativity and building skills. At fifteen, I finally realized what I wanted to do in life. My love for building and creating new masterpieces with my hands and imagination is what led me to the STEM field and inspired me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

Someone who inspired me to become an engineer is a famous YouTuber named James Hobson, also known as "The Hacksmith" on YouTube. He’s a mechanical engineer who builds all kinds of cool and unique inventions, such as a real-life Spider-Man web slinger, a fully functioning lightsaber, and even an actual flying Iron Man suit. One day, while watching one of his videos, he mentioned that he was a mechanical engineer, and that moment stuck with me. It continues to inspire me to pursue the same path.

FOSSI: Fast forward, where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I see myself financially stable, actively involved in my community, and continuing to pursue my dreams in both engineering and business. I believe it all starts at home, so giving back to the place I came from is one of my biggest motivations. It pushes me to work hard and stay focused on making my dreams a reality.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I am a three-sport athlete (baseball, football, and basketball).
  • I can play four different instruments including the viola, piano, drums, harmonica, and I can sing.
  • I am a barber.
