Meet Maya Cherubin: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending Howard University

April 25, 2025

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Maya Cherubin, and I am a second-generation Caribbean-American from Queens, New York. From a young age, I was inspired by my parents and grandmother, who helped fuel my love for learning, especially reading. This drive led me to graduate in the top 20 of my class, become a member of the National Honor Society and National Social Studies Honor Society, and earn both an AP Scholar with Distinction and an AP Capstone Diploma. Outside the classroom, I spent five years on the Varsity Track and Field team, serving as captain for three years. During my track career, I earned all-county honors four times and was named MVP three times. Additionally, I've been dancing for the past 13 years, competing in the Queens NAACP ACT-SO Competition, where I won gold in Dance and had the opportunity to compete at the national level in 2022. These experiences have shaped me into a well-rounded individual, and I pride myself on my leadership, dedication, and passion.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I’ve always been curious about how and why things work, and learning about Black inventors and intellectuals inspired me to pursue my passions. I became particularly interested in chemistry after my first class in 10th grade and plan to use my degree to pursue a career in cosmetic chemistry. I’m eager to learn from every lab, lecture, and research opportunity, and I believe a degree in chemistry will provide me with the tools to make a meaningful impact in the beauty industry.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In 10 years, I see myself following in the footsteps of Danessa Myricks and Olamide Olowe, Black women that are pioneers in the beauty industry. They are known for constantly reinventing the wheel when it comes to new formulas, packaging, marketing, and setting standards for inclusivity that longstanding brands are scrambling to match.

I plan to utilize the skills I've acquired throughout my education to bring forth innovative (and affordable) makeup or skincare products that take the industry by storm. I also want to give back to the community by funding dance education for girls who, like me, may aspire to pursue both the arts and STEM fields, despite being told they couldn't balance both. Ultimately, I aim to inspire others, not just within the cosmetic chemistry field, but on a global scale.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

I founded my school's first-ever Social Justice Club to raise awareness and take action on social issues that impact us.
