Meet Kennedy Anglin: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

April 28, 2025

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kennedy Anglin, and I am a proud graduate of William J. Brennan High School in San Antonio, Texas. I am currently attending North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, where I am majoring in environmental studies. As a track athlete, I competed in the 400m and 800m relays and was named to the Northside ISD Academic All-District Track Team in 2022, 2023, and 2024. I was also recognized by the Texas High School Coaches Association as an Honorable Mention for the Track and Field Academic All-State Team in 2024. In addition to athletics, I am a member of the National Honor Society and The Lemonade Circle. As a future environmental scientist, I aspire to advocate for communities disproportionately affected by environmental issues, ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping the future of our planet.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

Air pollution, contaminated water, climate change, global warming, disposable products, and the growing amount of trash and solid waste are all widely debated environmental issues. Every day, there are reports of extreme weather events, trash in the oceans harming wildlife, high levels of air pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. How much of an impact do human activities have on the environment? What can we do to prevent, reverse, or slow down climate change and reduce pollution? Have we already caused too much damage to the Earth, or is there still time to take action and lessen the harm? These are the types of questions I want to address as an environmental scientist. Statistics show that only 3.1% of environmental scientists are Black, and only 38.3% are women. Even though the field is one of the least diverse, I am excited and determined to pursue a successful career in it.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Receiving this scholarship relieves some of the financial pressure of attending NC A&T and allows me to focus more fully on my studies. It will also expose me to new opportunities and help me connect with other Black STEM students. Through the mentorship aspect of the scholarship, I will gain valuable career advice and guidance to support both my education and future career.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

I have been inspired by Wawa Gatheru, the founder of Black Girl Environmentalist. She has fueled my interest in an environmental science career by exposing me to the many paths within environmental science and environmental justice, and by showing me how I can make an impact through my career choice. Seeing a young Black woman pursuing a career aligned with my interests and speaking out about the issues I care about is truly inspiring. Black women make up a very small percentage of environmental scientists, so it is encouraging to see someone who has been successful both academically and professionally while advocating for underrepresented communities.

FOSSI: Fast forward, where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I will have completed both my bachelor's and master's degrees. I will be early in my environmental science career, working in a position that includes both field and lab research. I also see myself as a frequent traveler, both for work and for pleasure. I will be actively working toward my goal of helping communities adopt more sustainable lifestyles that benefit both people and the environment.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
