The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) marked a major milestone, celebrating its first class of college graduates in a virtual event.
The program began with an inspiring video featuring 2021 FOSSI scholar graduates, followed by remarks from Mark Costa, Chairman & CEO of Eastman and FOSSI Advisory Board Chair, and Ashley Christopher, Esq., Founder & CEO of HBCU Week.
Costa congratulates scholars and offers real-world advice
Costa congratulated students and pointed out that “a STEM background is by far one of the best skillsets any one can have in the working world. It allows you to solve problems, have structured thinking, and take a systematic approach, which is often the essential aspect of succeeding in business.”
He encouraged them to consider the chemical industry, highlighting that “94% of everything in the world has chemistry in it. When you get involved in the industry, you become an essential part of everyday life. The products and technology we deliver to the marketplace have a huge impact on the quality of human life and our environment.”
He also advised scholars to be open-minded, noting that “we all want the perfect job and career path. The real world doesn’t work that way. Half of success in life is luck and jumping on opportunities that come your way – taking that risk and focusing on doing the best job you can. When you deliver a great performance, other great opportunities will follow.”
Christopher discusses the lifelong impact of HBCU STEM education
“I am in awe of our first FOSSI graduating class,” said Christopher. “In addition to the education you received, the knowledge you’ve acquired at your HBCU has prepared you for something very unique.
“For a four-year period you have been able to look to your left and right and not be the minority. You have formed relationships that will last a lifetime and have access to a vast network of future leaders.
“And one day you will look up and acknowledge all the work and effort and experience you had that has allowed you to show up and shine in your individual careers.
“I look forward to seeing your names in lights in the future. Congratulations FOSSI Class of 2025!”
