Meet Aubria King: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Spelman College

April 24, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Aubria King and I was born and raised in Newark, NJ. Throughout my four years of high school, I served as captain of the cheerleading team, vice president, senior leader, and I was also a member of the prom committee. While balancing these extracurriculars, I took a total of 12 AP classes and I graduated in the top 10% of my class. Outside of the classroom, I am an intern at Butterfly Dreamz where I act as a Health Excel Fellow and a Write to Lead intern. Through working with Butterfly Dreamz, I am now a published co-author of the Butterfly Dreamz leadership journal. I also worked with YMS, Rutger’s Abbott Leadership Institute Youth Media Symposium, to host a youth-led forum to encourage Newark residents to vote in school board elections.  I have passions in both STEM and social justice, as I love working to help improve my community. This fall, I will be attending Spelman College, where I will further expand my interest and knowledge in biotechnology.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I will have a masters in biomedical engineering. Following graduation, I aspire to work at a major biotech company, like Amgen. By then, I would have also completed my own biomedical research that would be published in an academic journal. In order to satisfy my passion for social justice,  I will establish my own non-profit where I plan to expose minorities to different careers in biotech. Through this, I hope to further diversify the tech industry and inspire young children of color to chase their dreams.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

  • I love helping people, learning new things, and exploring.
  • During the school year, I dedicated numerous hours to volunteering and creating movie nights for those living in homeless shelters.
  • I spent my summers lifeguarding at my local pool.
  • I studied abroad in Barcelona Spain. Studying abroad allowed me to indulge in another culture and improve my Spanish. I look forward to seeing more of the world, while still continuing to help my own community.
