FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Chanae Davis, I'm 17 years old and I'll be starting my journey at Howard University in the fall as a chemistry major. I was born in Elkton, Maryland, and have been fortunate enough to have two remarkable parents who are both educators. During my time in high school, I actively participated in various clubs and engaged in community service. I had the privilege of serving as the President, Secretary, and Past President of the Interact Club, which instilled in me the value of serving others in my community. Additionally, I held the position of Secretary in the Key Club at Elkton High School, which deepened my passion for community service and provided me with insights into the needs of my local community. I also dedicated my time to being a member of the Black Student Union, National Honors Society, Student Government, Choir, and Yearbook. I consistently achieved honor roll status each year, and I also secured first place in my category at my high school's Science Fair. After graduating from high school in 2023, I made the decision to pursue my higher education at Howard University in Washington DC.
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
As an African American young woman, I held firm beliefs during my upbringing that hard work and unwavering commitment would propel me toward success. I developed a deep affection for science and mathematics as I grew older, finding that the more challenging these subjects became, the more my passion for them flourished. Both of my parents being educators in the STEM field played a significant role in nurturing my love for the sciences, particularly biology and mathematics. Despite the prevalent narratives in high school about the arduous nature of pursuing a career in STEM, my passion remained unwavering, and I was determined to follow this path.
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
After careful consideration, I made the choice to attend Howard University in Washington D.C., an esteemed Historically Black College or University (HBCU). While I am genuinely thrilled about this opportunity, it is important to acknowledge the financial burden associated with attending such a prestigious institution. Thankfully, the FOSSI scholarship holds the potential to alleviate some of the financial strain by aiding in covering my tuition expenses. Moreover, this scholarship program offers the added benefit of connecting me with fellow FOSSI scholars, affording me the chance to forge meaningful and lasting connections with individuals who share similar circumstances and aspirations.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
To be honest, I currently lack specific role models within my chosen field, but I draw inspiration from individuals who have displayed unwavering dedication in their respective careers. Zendaya, despite being in a different industry, impresses me with her young and relentless pursuit of success as an actress, dancer, and singer. Additionally, I find inspiration in Isimeme Edeko, an influential figure known for empowering young African American women to embrace their true selves. I deeply appreciate her efforts and aspire to make a similar impact in the future. However, the most significant role models in my life are my parents. Witnessing their daily hard work and witnessing their accomplishments has played a crucial role in shaping my character and work ethic. I am immensely grateful for everything they have done for me and I'll continue to look up to them in the years to come.
