FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and I live with my mother, father and 2 younger siblings. In my down time, you can usually find me hanging out with my family and friends, binge watching my favorite T.V. series, laughing over Tik Toks, playing card games, or listening to music! I also enjoy skateboarding and volunteering!
I have the honor of attending the Illustrious Spelman College in the fall where I plan to major in Chemistry and minor in theater and performance. I am eager to attend an HBCU and immerse myself in the experience!
FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?
My passion for Chemistry developed in high school, our weekly labs really sparked my curiosity about how different chemicals and formulas can create new chemicals and formulas that serve a different purpose. Once I dug deeper into the STEM field, I learned how low the percentage was for African American women in STEM. This motivated me to want to pursue a STEM degree even more!
FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?
Receiving this scholarship is such a blessing to me because it will help me along my path of attending the #1 HBCU in the nation, Spelman College. It will also help ease the financial burden from my parents and I, in addition to allowing me to devote most of my time to studying and pursuing the high academic standard I've always set for myself.
FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?
A role model in my life that has influenced me the most is my mother. She has always been my biggest supporter in everything I do, she supports every decision that I have made and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her encouragement and guidance. My mom has influenced me to want to explore the entrepreneurial path and merge that with my love for helping others. She has shown me, through her experience of being an entrepreneur, that if I work hard, despite any adversity, I am capable of achieving my own dreams and goals.
FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?
In 10 years, I hope to have my PhD and be in the process of buliding my hair care brand. I also hope to be successfully collaborating with different urban community schools, to encourage Black and Brown girls to explore the STEM field through camps, clubs, and workshops.
