Meet Indya Griffin: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State

January 19, 2024

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Indya Griffin, and I am an African American female with a mission to make the world a better place. As a computer science major, I am dedicated to using technology to solve real-world problems and create positive change. There are many issues in the world that need to be solved and with technology advancements, the sky is the limit.

My journey hasn't always been easy, but I draw my strength and confidence from God. The relationship I have with God has been a constant source of inspiration, guiding me through difficult times, and brightening up my life in unimaginable ways. With the light God has put in me, I am committed to illuminating the world to make it a brighter place. Having faith in God guides me and gives me the strength and wisdom to pursue my goals and make a difference.

The FOSSI scholarship is important to me because it will help me establish my career and prove that I am qualified to be there.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am involved with inspiring the youth and helping others. I help raise my three little sisters with my single mother. I also mentor and teach eighth graders, and volunteer at hospice. In all that I do, I remain committed to my faith and to the belief that we are all capable of making a difference in the world, as long as we have a solid foundation. With my foundation being built on God, adding hard work and dedication, I know that I can achieve my goals and create a brighter future for all.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

STEM fields are still dominated by white males, and black girls often face challenges. In life, there is nothing wrong with a challenge, but issues arise when you are treated differently. I transferred to a predominantly white school, and I was the only black girl in my computer science class. During that time, I felt isolated, and my classmates didn't help me when I needed it. I experienced an uncomfortable situation that many black girls face in STEM fields. So, this scholarship helps alleviate a burden that comes with pursuing a STEM degree as an African American. It is one less thing I have to worry about. With this scholarship also offering mentorship, it will give me exposure to industry professionals and allow me to gain hands-on experience. The FOSSI scholarship is important to me because it will help me establish my career and prove that I am qualified to be there.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

I am a girl who is a true jack-of-all-trades! I love to create and build things with my hands, whether it's puzzles, Legos, or drawing. I am always up for a challenge and enjoy pushing myself to create something new and unique. Before I get busy with building things, I enjoy studying the Bible and meditating on God's word, finding peace and inspiration in my faith. I also love fashion and enjoy exploring new styles. With seven sisters, I am never short on people to share experiences with. Whether it's studying the Bible, building, drawing, or exploring, I am always up for a challenge.
