Meet Billi Hall: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Spelman College

October 10, 2023

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Billi Hall and I graduated from Holton-Arms School, a predominantly white high school, in Maryland. This fall, I plan on attending Spelman College as a biomedical engineering major. I enjoy STEM because I believe I can help my community and break down healthcare barriers with the knowledge I gain.

When not advancing my STEM interests, I am spending time with my family, volunteering at So Others Might Eat in D.C., and exploring my interest in music, fashion, and traveling. Even if my career goals change, I know that I want to use my education to help my community and ensure that I have played a role in helping the world become a better place for Black people to come.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

My mother has been a standing role model since I was of age to truly comprehend all that she has done and continues to do for herself and the rest of my family. She is someone to look up to career wise and I continue to marvel at the strides she makes and the ways that she manages to accomplish her many goals.  Though of course, she may sometimes over stretch herself, it's her willingness to always jump at the opportunity to help and commit to something else if she feels it will truly make a difference in the lives of others

At home, she brings unmatched positive energy, not to mention, she serves as my own personal reminder app, alarm clock, and much more. She is the definition of a poised, independent, and successful woman and I hope to grow up to touch a fraction of the lives she has.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

My interest in roller skating started with my dad and became a routine Saturday morning trip when my siblings and I were younger. On the topic of siblings, I have 2 brothers; one older and one younger, making me the only girl AND middle child.

I also enjoy dancing and have been dancing various styles since the age of three, including ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, African, and hip-hop.

One of my most prized facts, though, is that my great-grandmother is still going strong at 105 years old. She inspires me to persevere and is actually who inspired me to attend an HBCU, as she was among Huston-Tillotson University's Class of 1938.
