Meet Jaden Banks: 2023 FOSSI Scholar Attending Virginia State University

October 4, 2023

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, my name is Jaden Banks, I'm from the Bay Area and I graduated from Pinole Valley High School. I like cooking, hiking, going to the gym, and helping out my community. In the fall, I will be attending Virginia State University and studying electrical and electronic engineering.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

I chose to pursue engineering because out of all the subjects, it inspires me the most. My engineering class has allowed me to build a bridge, a house model, and a motor car. Through my classes, I have also been exposed to information about electrical engineering, civil engineering, manufacturing, computer science, and the overall industry. I plan to pursue a career in engineering because I love the hands-on experience that engineering requires.

I have developed my interest for engineering through programs like Apple coding events, MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement), and being part of the TRIO Upward Bound program. These different programs allowed me to use my creativity and explore other skills within engineering like python and wiring circuits. As a young Black man in engineering, I plan to give back to my community by spreading the knowledge I gain.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Receiving the FOSSI scholarship will help me attend college without worrying about how to pay for it, and, it'll also help me stay focused in class and keep up good grades. With this scholarship, I can also spark change in my community by showing that kids that come from the same place as me, can do big things in life. This scholarship will make my college experience much more enjoyable and help my mother with out-of-state tuition while I pursue my dream of becoming an engineer and giving back to the community that helped shape me into who I am today.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

A role model that had the most influence is my mother. She has been the reason for my success and has helped me find my love for engineering.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I see myself happy that I received my degree in engineering and working for a successful tech company or electric company like PG&E, Google, or Microsoft. I also see myself helping out my community by hosting fun activities that helps kids in the community learn about and get into the STEM field. In the future, I also plan to start my own business and ultimately host a scholarship at my old high school.
