This summer, FOSSI sponsor AdvanSix gave five outstanding FOSSI scholars the opportunity to experience life at a chemical company.

Three scholars had nine-week internships at AdvanSix’s sites in Hopewell, Virginia and Frankfort, Pennsylvania.  At the end of their internships, they joined two other FOSSI scholars to participate in “FOSSI Week,” now an annual event in Richmond which includes plant tours, networking sessions with employees of all levels from a variety of careers, and quality time with mentors and fellow scholars. They also got to engage in fun activities together including some great meals, Go-Karting, bowling, and golf.  As they concluded their time with AdvanSix, each student highlighted what they enjoyed the most.

FOSSI scholars reflect on their experience

Nahla Abdul-Hadi, Delaware State: This whole experience was great. I am very grateful to have the chance to meet my mentors and fellow scholars while getting to know them on a personal level.

Jaden Johnson, Norfolk State: My experience was phenomenal to say the least. Visiting the plant allowed me to see other ways my career can be applied outside of the technical field. One of the more impactful things was seeing successful black individuals. Having the dinners we had, taking the trips we did, talking to the FOSSI scholars and people in the industry, I’ve learned a lot.

Kendall Cousins, Howard University: I feel that I was able to learn a lot of information that I didn’t know before as I went on tours of each plant.  However, out of everything I really enjoyed speaking with Maintenance Engineer, Darryl Goodwin, as I was able to pick his brain on what his day-to-day has been like and how he got to his position.

Dieunette Adusei-Peasah, Virginia State: I learned a lot from every individual that I had a chance to work with as well as everyone I had the opportunity to talk and listen to.  Additionally, I’m happy I had the opportunity to meet the other FOSSI scholars and network with interns from the different plants. From the food, to the networking opportunities, I am glad that I got to be a part of this experience.

Jaimon Washington, Howard University: I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my mentors and getting to meet and connect with the other FOSSI scholars.  I think that it’s important to engage with your fellow peers to gain new insights on life. I can’t wait to continue with the FOSSI program and build long lasting relationships in the future that will continue beyond FOSSI. LOL, nothing like a good old family reunion.

Final words from AdvanSix

As the scholars headed back home, Zolla Kyle, Senior Human Resources Manager, and FOSSI program lead for AdvanSix, reflected on their time together sharing, “I have had the privilege to lead the FOSSI program at AdvanSix and serve as a mentor to our scholars, and there is no more rewarding experience.  There are so many opportunities available in chemistry and manufacturing and to be able to showcase the potential to the next generation of leaders and also help enhance diversity in the industry is an incredible opportunity.”
