Before 2022 FOSSI scholar Saiyd Harvin headed back to school for his sophomore year at Wilberforce University, he stopped by one of Univar Solution's plants located in Twinsburg, OH. His mentor, Darryl Barbee, Regional Sales Manager, and Tim Spehar, General Manager, both of Univar Solutions, gave Saiyd a behind-the-scenes look at STEM in action.
Saiyd was able to experience multiple instances of how his Computer Engineering degree would come into play in the real world and much more. Read more about Saiyd's experience below.
Univar Solutions: How was your summer?
Saiyd: It was a grind! But a good one. I gained great experiences through two of my summer jobs— working at a steel plant and at Amazon. I learned a lot from my co-workers, especially to take chances and to not be afraid to take a new opportunity.
Univar Solutions: What are you looking forward to during your Sophomore year?
Saiyd: I’m ready to get right on the ball. Last year was an adjustment, and now that I know what to expect, I’m really excited about getting back to class, chasing those good grades and getting into the academics.
Univar Solutions: What was your favorite part of the tour?
Saiyd: The whole day! It was fascinating to learn about the different chemistries, like how tartaric acid is used as a filter in the oil industry and it helps create that “burst” of flavor in some candies—like SweeTarts. So cool.
Univar Solutions: How will your tour experience apply to your Computer Engineering degree?
Saiyd: Seeing all the digital work really gives me perspective on how different IT jobs come into play. The new barcoding system, Asset Management, was very interesting. Plus, understanding key skills in other areas, like sales, helped me see how I can incorporate many different skills into future opportunities.
Univar Solutions: Anything else to add?
Saiyd: I just have to say the people here are awesome. Every single person I met has been so welcoming and helped me learn a lot.
