Meet Josiah Moore: 2022 FOSSI Scholar Attending Prairie View A&M University

December 19, 2022

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, my name is Josiah Moore, and I am a graduate of Harmony School of Discovery. I spent all of my middle and high school years there, and I graduated with an unweighted GPA of 3.7 and a weighted GPA of 4.18. I am the oldest of four, with my closest sibling being two years younger than me. For college, I'm going to Praire View A&M University in the Fall of 2022.

Throughout my high school career, I completed around 150 hours of community service. I was a part of various clubs such as Cyperparitot, Esports, National Honor Society, and Rho Kappa Honor Society.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

The class that made me so passionate about STEM was my computer science principles class because it allowed me to experience the beauty of coding. This class inspired me to pursue a career in computer science, showing me the expressive nature of code that allows for multiple solutions to a problem.  Activities like creating a game and fixing other student's code helped solidify my passion for computer science. At the end of the day, my teacher's enthusiasm for teaching this class helped spark my love for STEM.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

The reason why this scholarship is vital to me is pretty clear, and I'm grateful to have the ability to attend college without a financial burden. FOSSI is opening the door for opportunities that I, otherwise, wouldn't have. Without this scholarship, I wouldn't have been able to afford college, and I would've had to focus on finding a job to pay for college, instead of going to college right after graduating from high scool.

Because of FOSSI, I now have the opportunity to pursue a career in my dream field without worrying about the price of my degree.

FOSSI: Who is a role model that has influenced you?

The most prominent role model in my life is someone whos been there for all parts of my life. That is my father, Quincy C. Moore, III. He is a loving father and the Honors Program director at Praire View A&M University. Ever since I was young, he has been a big inspiration to me. My dad works hard on all of his tasks and completes them with the utmost care, and compassion. Even when he's tired, he puts on an unselfish smile and continues to help those around him.

Since birth, my dad has always put me first and he's always made sure I had everything I needed. My father is the type of man that will put others before himself, especially his family.  I admire that since it takes a lot of strength to be willing to give up things you want to do in order to help others prosper.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I will have my degree  in computer science and be working in cybersecurity, heping to keep the world safe. I hope to work for a mainstream company and to ultimately start my own company, designing solutions to keep the internet space safe.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading nonfiction novels, watching old star wars films, and sometimes just coding.
