Meet Trevor Melton: 2021 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

January 26, 2022

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Trevor: I am a senior at Souderton Area High School who is tenaciously pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. I am an athlete in varsity high school track, where I am the team captain, and I play varsity basketball. I also participate in the Future Business Leaders of America, the National Honors Society, and I am an AP Scholar. Working effectively in groups is one of my best attributes that I have developed throughout my years as an athlete in team sports.

I take pride in my ability to overcome challenges, which I have learned to do through my problem-solving skills. I am passionate about taking every opportunity available to serve my community. That is why over the past four years, I have volunteered to feed the homeless and help the needy monthly. My service to others has taught me to be humble and to truly appreciate what life has to offer.

I truly feel that the FOSSI scholarship has given me the opportunity to become a STEM engineer who will be able to help our environment in the future.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

Trevor: Since middle school, I have had my mind fixated on becoming an engineer. Engineers are analytical thinkers and very good problem solvers who require a strong background in STEM-related subjects. Surrounded by a family of chemical engineers currently employed in diverse careers, I have seen first-hand how this field touches so many different aspects of the environment.

Throughout my high school career, I've challenged myself by taking rigorous courses, participating in multiple extracurricular activities, and being involved in my community. Because of this, I've garnered the skills and knowledge that will help me in the next phases of my life.

However, none of the activities and events I've participated in have piqued my interest more than the science fair. From zoology to chemistry, I was able to explore the STEM field, which led to the passion I have today.

FOSSI: Why is receiving the FOSSI scholarship important for you?

Trevor: "Through The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative, we are committed to helping build and connect communities, elevate standards of living and contribute meaningfully to the world’s economy. This commitment cannot be realized without addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion in our profession and addressing the challenges faced by underrepresented groups."

This statement represents FOSSI's mission for people in MY community. I want to be able to work with more people who look like me and have diverse experiences like I do. When corporate companies acquire diverse talent, their ability to provide solutions to complex problems increases significantly because of the different points of view achieved through diversity. I truly feel that the FOSSI scholarship has given me the opportunity to become a STEM engineer who will be able to help our environment in the future.

FOSSI: Fast forward – where do you see yourself in ten years?

Trevor: After college, I will start my engineering career with an entry-level role that will utilize the upper-level courses from my university training such as thermodynamics and chemical plant design.  After understanding the practical application of these disciplines, I should have developed competence with my work results that will allow me to continue my education while working.

I plan on earning a Master’s in Business Administration to acquire the credentials for promotion to management and eventually into an executive leadership position.

Ultimately, I see myself as an executive in a corporation.  Because I am passionate about helping our environment, I feel that I can provide the most impact as an executive where I can lead by example and establish policies to decrease the carbon footprint of my company over time.  My love and interest in chemistry will drive this process.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.
